FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Arkansas basketball coach John Pelphrey said Thursday that Matt Figger will come with him from South Alabama and become the Razorbacks' director of basketball operations. "I feel like he's one of the best in the country," Pelphrey said. "He's got a great understanding of me after having spent five years with me. He understands what I want and what I'm all about, and he's going to be a great asset to us."

MOBILE — Charlotte coach Bobby Lutz appears to be a leading candidate to replace South Alabama men's basketball coach John Pelphrey.

Lutz, whose contract with the 49ers runs through the 2008-2009 season, visited the Mobile campus and the school's basketball facilities Wednesday, two days after Pelphrey was introduced as Arkansas' new coach, the Press-Register reported in a story Thursday.

South Alabama athletic director Joe Gottfried has said he's looking for someone with experience as a head coach.

HATTIESBURG, Miss. — Jasmine Sanders of Atmore has signed a national letter of intent with Southern Mississippi, women's basketball coach Joye Lee-McNelis has announced Wednesday.

Sanders, a 6-foot-2 center, averaged 13 points, 12 rebounds and nearly 4 blocks per game as a high school senior. She finished the season with 22 double-doubles and recorded seven triple doubles.
