Spencer's shot a
winner for Decatur

Decatur High picked up a 9-6 Class 5A, Area 16 baseball win over Athens on Monday, gaining the final lead on a three-run homer by Graham Spencer in the top of the seventh inning.

Decatur fought back from a 5-4 deficit in the seventh when Graham's bomb put the Red Raiders ahead 7-5, scoring Tyler Spivey and Will Dennis.

"That was clutch for Graham Spencer to come up with that," Decatur coach mike Burns said.

Red Raiders teammate Pete Brown stepped to the plate and capped the win with a two-run homer, driving in William Sartain to close the inning with Decatur up 9-5.

Also for Decatur, Alex Gist was 2-for-5 with a pair of RBIs.

Michael Schuster got the pitching win, relieving starter Blaine Ingram in the fourth inning. Schuster struck out two batter, allowing three runs and four hits.

Ingram went the first four innings for Decatur, striking out six, allowing four hits and three runs.

Colin McMurry pitched the complete game for Athens, striking out seven.

"The biggest thing was that we never gave up," Burns said. "We'd lost leads earlier in the year, but we fought back in this one."

Decatur will host Athens in a doubleheader Tuesday beginning at 4:30 p.m.

Decatur Heritage 10, Athens Bible 6: Drew Atchley led Decatur Heritage with a two-run homer and a pair of singles.

Chase Wright had two singles and a double for the Eagles, while Bo Godwin delivered two singles and scored twice.

Luke Adams pitched all seven innings for Decatur Heritage (10-12), striking out five and allowing 10 hits.

For Athens Bible (20-7), Connor Brown had a double and a single. Joseph Baker and Troy Steelman each had a double for the Trojans.

Athens Bible will host Decatur Heritage on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.

Tanner 13, Priceville 12: Chip Greenhaw drove in the game winning run with an RBI single, scoring George Adams with two outs in the ninth inning.

Greenhaw also got the win on the mound for the Rattlers, coming in with the game tied at 12-12 in the sixth inning.

Greenhaw pitched the last four innings for the win, striking out two batters.

Starter Corey Ham struck out four in five innings for Tanner.

Clay McMeans had a solo homer for Tanner in the contest. Blake Montgomery went 4-for-5 with three RBIs and scored three runs.

Priceville was paced by Rand Hutchison's solo homer. Hutchison also had a single. Jeremy Hale had a single and a double for the Bulldogs.

Tanner will play at Speake on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.


East Limestone 3, Madison County 1: The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fourth when East Limestone (18-10) put up all three of its runs.

Morgan Franks led off with a double and was later driven in on a double by Cassandra McKinney. McKinney scored on a passed ball to put the Lady Indians ahead 2-0.

Kayla Sneed scored the final run on an RBI double by Staci Johnson.

West Morgan 13, Tanner 1: Lauryn Kilgo was 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and three RBIs for the Lady Rebels.

Also pacing the winners were Sara Hulvey and Hannah Harris, who each hit a single and a double for West Morgan (28-9).

Hayden Hamby got the win on the mound, striking out one batter and allowing six hits in four innings.


Huntsville High boys 313, Decatur 320, Athens 334, Austin 335: In the 19-team field Arab Invitational at Cherokee Ridge Country Club on Monday, Decatur's boys team placed second behind Huntsville High.

The Red Raiders were led by Bill Nabors, who shot a 72 for second place individually.

Also for Decatur, Andrew Lowry and Stuart Morehead each shot an 81, and Braxton Rainey shot an 86.

For the sixth-place Athens team, Justin Fulks was best with a 78, while Joe Higginbotham shot an 81.

Austin placed seventh as a team, led by Dan Stephenson's 81.
