Decatur dominates
Athens in sweep

Decatur High's baseball team got plenty of offense in a doubleheader with Athens on Tuesday and it translated into a pair of wins for the Red Raiders.

Decatur earned the sweep, beating Athens 13-3 and 12-7. The Red Raiders recorded 13 hits in the first game and 15 hits in the second game.

Decatur's Alex Gist was 4-for-11 in the doubleheader, including a two-run homer in the second game. Tyler Spivey went 7-for-8 at the plate.

The Red Raiders' Graham Spencer also had a two-run homer in the second game, while Hunter Smith was 3-for-4.

Also for Decatur, William Sartain was 3-for-3 in the opener and Will Dennis went 3-for-5.

Athens' Zack Brock hit a solo home run in the opening game.

Also for the Golden Eagles, Brad Reasonover went 2-for-4 in the second game and Brad McPherson was 2-for-3.

Joe Lothspeich got the win in the first game, pitching six innings and striking out three batters while allowing five hits. Steven Tumbleson was the winning pitcher in the second game, striking out two in three innings of relief.

Drei Marthaler was Decatur's starter in the second game, going four innings and striking out three.

Decatur will host Sparkman in a doubleheader Friday at 4 p.m.

Athens Bible 8, Decatur Heritage 2: Joseph Baker and the Athens Bible defense kept Decatur Heritage at bay.

Baker struck out eight batters and allowed seven hits in seven innings for the win.

Ryan Morring had a double and two singles for the Trojans. Will Stinnett was also a highlight at the plate with a solo home run and a single for the winners. A.J. Price also had a double for Athens Bible.

Decatur Heritage's Chase Wright gave the Eagles a double and a single.

Drew Atchley hit a two-RBI double, while Bo Godwin and Luke Adams each had two singles.

With the win, Athens Bible and Decatur Heritage are tied at 3-1 in the area and will play a tie-breaker game Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. at Tanner High.

West Morgan 26, Addison 1: Daniel Korpi paced the winners in an explosive day at the plate. Korpi blasted three home runs and a triple, finishing the game with 10 RBIs.

West Morgan also got a two-run homer, two singles and four RBIs from Seth Wallace.

Teammate Michael Clem continued the home-run rash with a two-run bomb and a pair of singles. West Morgan's Jacob Crowell had a double and Tyler Rogers had two singles.

Anthony Atemon pitched the win for the Rebels, striking out four batters and allowing one hit in four innings.

West Morgan will host Westminster on Saturday.


Decatur 5, Russellville 0: Decatur's Mollie Russell struck out 13 batters, allowing three hits in the win.

Jennifer Lawrence and Meg Whitten each recorded a double and a single, pacing the Lady Red Raiders at the plate.

Lawrence had a pair of RBIs, and Whitten had an RBI as Decatur (30-14) clinched the Class 5A, Area 16 title.

Lawrence County 14, McAdory 0: Kaylyn Smith pitched the shutout in the 31-team Nike Gulf Shores Classic in Orange Beach, allowing two hits in five innings.

Sallie Beth Burch led the Lady Red Devils at the plate, hitting two singles and a double with three RBIs.

Teammate Summer Wilkerson had two singles, a double and two RBIs.

Bracket play in the tournament begins Wednesday.

Lawrence County 2, Daphne 1: Wilkerson struck out six batters in six innings for the win.

Wilkerson, who had a triple in the contest, scored the winning run on a sacrifice by Nicole Jackson in the sixth inning.

Whitney Hood scored the Lady Red Devils' first run, and Burch had a double.

Leeds 3, Lawrence County 2: Hood had a single and drove in both runs for Lawrence County (30-13).

Burch had a double for the Lady Red Devils' only extra-base hit.

Hartselle 14, Brewer 1: Leadoff batter Kristy Pevahouse was best at the plate for the Lady Tigers in the win, going 3-for-5 with a solo home run, two singles and three RBIs.

Also for Hartselle, Haley Miller went 2-for-4, including a two-RBI double and a single, finishing with a total of four RBIs.

Mary Curtis pitched two innings and struck out one batter, earning the win for Hartselle (36-9).


West Morgan boys 3, Ardmore 1: The win sets a school record for the 3-year old program. The Rebels' Javier Marcial scored a goal and assisted two scores.

Jared Spooner and Ivan Uriostegui each contributed a goal for the winning Rebels off help from Marcial.

Decatur boys 7, Butler 0: Decatur's Joseph Salgado and Tom Gray each had a hat trick for Decatur (11-3-3). Enrique Salcido tacked on one goal for the Red Raiders in the shutout.

Decatur will host Lee-Huntsville on Tuesday for the 5A, Section 7 title.

Ardmore girls 1, West Morgan 0: Despite dominating play in the second half, the Lady Rebels weren't able to connect on several chances after halftime.


Priceville boys 166, West Morgan 179: Priceville's Brett Wilson shot a 38 on Tuesday at Valley Landing to lead the Bulldogs.

Priceville's Andrew Johnson and West Morgan's Justin Poole tied for second place individually, each shooting a 40.

Priceville's Nic Akin and West Morgan's Jacob Dockery were next best in the field, each shooting a 41.
