LCHS goes 3-1 at beach tournament

Nicole Jackson slapped a double and single as Lawrence County advanced with a 6-5 win over Pisgah in the Nike Gulf Coast Classic in Orange Beach on Wednesday.

Summer Wilkerson, the winning pitcher, Ashley Pitt, and Cassie Terry all singled twice. Sallie Beth Burch singled and knocked in two runs.Wilkerson struck out nine in six innings.

Lawrence County 1, Straughn 0: Kayln Smith hurled a one-hitter and struck out three in six innings for the win.

The Lady Red Devils score their lone run in the second when Whitney Hood, who had singled, came home on a single by Carlie Borden. Borden also added a triple. Ragan Fleming singled in the win, also.

Lawrence County 7, Colbert Heights 0: In four innings of work, Wilkerson struck out six for the win for Lawrence County. Pitt was the big stick at the plate with two singles and a double. Jackson and Burch added a pair of singles. Wilkerson doubled, while Terry and Hood each singled. Burch knocked in two runs.

Hueytown 1, Lawrence County 0: Wilkerson allowed four hits an struck out seven in eight innings, but it was not enough for the Lady Red Devils (33-13).

Hueytown scored in the bottom of the eight in an international tiebreaker to get the win.

Danville 5, Brewer 1: Kristin Thompson struck out 16 batters in seven innings pitched to lead Danville. Mallory George went 3-for-3 with two singles and a double, while Thompson was 2-for-3 with a double, a single and two RBIs.

Meagan Hormel went 1-for-3 with a single for Brewer.

Baseball

Cullman 5-2, Hartselle 2-0: In game one, Quinn Dunlap rapped a single and double while Caleb Murphy and Josh Aycox each singled. Aycox also scored a run in the Tuesday doubleheader.

Ryder Brasher had two singles and Tony Weaver and Aycox each singled in the second game for the Tigers.

Hartselle plays at Hillcrest on Thursday.

Athens Bible 7, Decatur Heritage 6: Ryan Morring allowed two runs on five hits to pick up the win. Joseph Baker had three singles and Jordan Pugh had two doubles for Athens Bible (22-7).

Drew Atchley blasted a home run for Decatur Heritage, and Chase Wright had a double and two RBIs.

With the win, Athens Bible clinched the Class 1A Area 15 title.

Tennis

Austin's Meleana McCutcheon defeated Guntersville's Jilli Sparks 10-0 in a No. 1 tennis match at the Guntersville Recreation Center on Tuesday. Guntersville won the team event 8-4.

Others posting singles wins for Austin were No. 8 Sydney Starkey over Ann Lusk 8-4; No. 9 Jordyn Wagner over Taylor Hayes 8-2; and No. 14 Andrea Mason over Morgan Tuggle 8-6.

McCutcheon and Elizabeth Cargile took a win for Austin in doubles. The duo of Linday Smith and Sydney Starkey also picked up a victory as did Jordyn Wagner and Alex Walker.

In boys action, Austin won 6-3.

Austin's Alex Worley defeated John Clark 10-7 in No. 1 singles. No. 2 Kyle Smith beat Josh Cameron 10-0. No. 3 Kyle Justice beat Brock Shelton 10-0. No. 5 Weston Brown won over Chris Collins 10-6. In boys doubles: No. 1 Smith-Worley won 10-5, and No. 3 Justice-Ben Ward won 10-5.
