FLORETTE — It couldn't get much better for the Decatur High softball team than its trio of dominant performances to open the first Morgan County softball tournament.
After shutting out both of its opponents in pool play Thursday at Huskey Park, Decatur put up a convincing 15-1 win over Brewer on Friday and remains undefeated in the seven-team event along with Hartselle.
In its three wins, Decatur has outscored its opponents 30-1.
"This is the way I hoped we would start and expected that we'd start," Decatur coach Ashley Mueller said. "We really wanted to start getting on an upward climb at this point in the season."
Mueller said the toughest challenge is still ahead.
Teams will have to endure a long day Saturday, with games in double-elimination bracket play starting at 9 a.m. at Huskey Park. The pool play games set up the seeding for the double-elimination portion of the tournament.
The finals are scheduled for Saturday at 7 p.m. at Brewer High.
Mueller said endurance becomes a factor at this point in the three-day event. But with two days down and one to go, she said her Lady Red Raiders have the depth to hold up.
"With a long day ahead, we're just glad to have two good pitchers," Mueller said.
Priceville, Brewer and Austin enter Saturday facing elimination after suffering losses in the first round of bracket play Friday.
Decatur (33-14) earned a bye in the first round by winning Pool A and will face West Morgan on Saturday at 9 a.m.
