Decatur closes season with doubleheader split

Decatur High's baseball team ended its season by splitting a doubleheader at Sparkman, romping in the first game 12-6 before falling 12-1 in the second contest.

Alex Gist pitched Decatur (15-21) to the win in the opener, his nerves calmed by the Red Raiders jumping out to a 11-0 lead before Sparkman scored. Additionally, Gist was 2-for-3 from the plate, knocking a two-run homer.

William Sartain had a perfect game, going 4-for-4 with two singles and two doubles. Also, John Frost and Tyler Spivey went 2-for-4 with a homer each. Graham Spencer, J.T. Boyd (two RBIs), Hunter Smith and Clint Dunlap (one RBI) had a single each.

In the second game, it was Sparkman (18-19) that jumped out early, taking an 11-0 lead in the first two innings. Frost and Pete Brown led Decatur, going 1-for-2 each.

Decatur Heritage 5-9, Brewer 3-16: Decatur Heritage won the opener as Luke Adams was the winning pitcher, going seven innings and giving up five hits.

Chase Wright had three singles and four RBIs, and Zac Woodruff had two singles. Brent Denson, Luke Adams and Sam Hurt each added a single.

For Brewer, Jordan McCutcheon, Justin Cole, Luke Mosteller and Eric Parker each had a single.

In the second game, Brewer rolled as Kyle Frost was the winning pitcher, giving up four hits. Frost also paced the Patriots at the plate with three singles. Justin Cole and Luke Mosteller had two singles each.

For Decatur Heritage, William Littlejohn and Drew Atchley had two singles each.

Pleasant Grove 6, Lawrence County 2: Lawrence County lost to Pleasant Grove in eight innings. Matthew Pugh pitched all eight frames, striking out eight. Radney Wallace was 2-for-4 with a double. Britt White was 2-for-3. Will Inman, Coty Way and Logan Terry each had a single.

Thompson 9, Lawrence County 8: Facing a 6A team, Pugh was 2-for-5 with a double. Logan Terry and Coty Way each had a single and two RBIs. Thomas Glenn had a single and a RBI. Inman, Wallace, Chase Puckett, Scott Steele and White each had a single. Way, Puckett and Cole Whalen pitched for the Devils.

Daphne 12, Lawrence County 2: Going against another 6A team, Pugh was 2-for-3 with a home run and a double, driving in two runs. Inman, Wes Holley, Way and White each had a single.

Holley and Grant Peebles pitched for the Red Devils.

Baldwin County 8, Lawrence County 1: Playing another 6A team, Logan Oliver and Holley were 2-for-3 for the Red Devils.

Pugh was 2-for-4. Russ Lang drove in Lawrence County's only run with a double. Scott White and Puckett added singles. Taylor McCulloch pitched 5 1/3 innings, striking out three.

Softball

Ardmore 5, East Limestone 3: Ardmore took first place in 4A, Area 14 with the win. Erica Boggs slugged the game-winning three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Winning pitcher Casey Steadman went seven innings, gave up five hits, struck out thirteen and walked four.

Kayla Sneed went seven innings for East Limestone, gave up six hits, struck out three and walked one.

Hitting for East Limestone, Carly Rhodes had a double and two RBIs. Cassandra McKinney contributed a single and one RBI. Morgan Franks and Danielle Holder had a double each, and McKenzie Crabtree added a single.

The Alabama High School Athletic Association released the state baseball playoff pairings Friday. Games involving local teams are listed. All games are Tuesday.

Class 1A

Decatur Heritage at Woodville, 5:30 p.m.
