PREP ROUNDUP
Hartselle tennis section champs
Austin softball wins, has chance to make state playoffs

From Staff Reports

Hartselle High's boys tennis team won the Class 5A, Section 4 championship in Gadsden by winning four singles divisions and one in doubles.

Hartselle will advance to the state tournament in Mobile on Monday and Tuesday. The Tigers scored 49 points to win their sectional as teams received two points for every singles victory and three for every win in doubles. Albertville placed second with 27 points.

Hartselle's Alex Brown won the No. 2 singles title, while Jeremy Roper won at No. 4 singles. John Landers won at No. 5 singles, and Chris Conner won at No. 6.

Anthony Penick advanced to the No. 1 singles finals before falling.

In doubles, Hartselle lost in the finals at No. 1 (Penick and Brown) and No. 2 (Roper and Conner). At No. 3 doubles, Landers and A.J. McNutt won their division.

A pair of Hartselle High girls tennis players won 5A, Section 4 championships Monday at Gadsden.

Candice Light won the No. 1 singles championship, while Katie Kilgore won at No. 3.

As a team, Hartselle finished fourth. Only the top two teams qualify for the state tournament. However, if the No. 1 singles champion comes from a team other than the top two, she advances to state play, too. That means Light will make the trip to Mobile along with the boys team for the state tournament.

Also for Hartselle at sectionals, Kelsey Jensen made the finals at No. 4 singles. Rachel Wiley made the semifinals at No. 2, and Dana Watson made the semifinals at No. 6.

In doubles, Hartselle got to the semifinals at Nos. 1 and 2. Light and Kilgore play No. 1, while Watson and Jensen play No. 2.
