Lawrence Co. owns county golf

The Lawrence County High girls and boys golf teams swept the county tournament at Deer Run Golf Course in Moulton on Thursday.

In boys action, the Lawrence red team shot its low 18-hole tournament score of the year, totaling 315.

Kyle West won a two-hole playoff with teammate Elijah Frost to take medalist honors. Both golfers shot 74s.

Casey Vinson posted an 82 and Brandon Dutton 83 for the red.

The Lawrence County white team was second with a 360 total. Clay Letson shot 82 and got support from Jakob Oliver’s 84 and Hunter Vennel’s 92.

Hatton finished third at 410. Blake Hall was low for the Hornets with an 88.

Jordan Jaggers posted a 100, Grant Parrish 109, Robin
Coan 113 and Stephen Nesmith 114.

R.A. Hubbard totaled 450 with Ramsee Miller posting a 91. Devans Orr, an Alabama State football signee, had a 112, Dontay Robinson 120 and Fred Davenport 130.

The Speake Bobcats, led by Alex Riffle’s 125, had a 561. Others playing for Speake were Gabe Tankersley, Michael McKee and Tyler Cates.

East Lawrence fielded three golfers in individual play. Kolby Buttram and Caleb Coan each carded 89s. Coty Alred followed with a 111.

In girls play, Lawrence County defeated Speake 335-374. Red Devil Kristin Ford led all girls with a 106. Haley Nichols had a 111, Samantha Hill 118, Libby Hjelm 120 and Terry Lynn Letson 125 to round out Lawrence scores.

Emily Smith shot a 108 to lead Speake. Baily Blankenship had a 130 and Megan Cooper a 136 for the Lady Bobcats.

Class 4A sectional play starts Tuesday with the girls teeing off at Canebrake Country Club in Athens. Lawrence County High will host the boys sectionals at Deer Run beginning at 8 a.m. Tuesday.

Softball

Lawrence County 4, Madison Academy 3: Sallie Beth Burch went 2-for-3 with two singles and an RBI for the Lady Red Devils. Whitney Hood had a single and Summer Wilkerson allowed one run in four innings pitched.

Ashley Pitt, Kassie Terry and Lindsey Kirby all had singles for Lawrence County (36-13).

Hazel Green 6, Austin 5: Amy Anderson went 2-for-4 with a home run, a double and drove in all five Lady Black Bears’ runs.

Sarah Corn scored a run and went 2-for-3 with two singles. Lauren Lindsey was 1-for-3 with a single and a run for Austin (21-31)

Danville 4, Fairview 0: Brittany Atkins pitched five strong innings, allowing four hits while striking out five for the Hawks (21-18).

Kristen Sparkman had two RBIs. Briana Callahan had a double, a stolen base and an RBI, while Bethany Evans and Mallory George each had singles.

Track

In the Class 5A, Section 3 meet, Brewer’s Courtney Scott finished first in the javelin, second in the shot put and third in the discuss.

Rodney Childs was first in the long jump and second in the triple, and Morgan Crawley was forth in the 800-meter race and 1600 meter race.

The 800-meter relay team of Kendra Jones, Crawley, Emily Trotter and Jessi Mann finished in second place.

The meet was at Scottsboro High School.
