Calhoun opens play at its new stadium with 2-game sweep

Calhoun Community College opened its new softball stadium with a doubleheader sweep of Bevill State-Sumiton 2-1 and 2-1.
Calhoun fell behind in first game as Bevill scored once in the top of the second inning. In the third inning, Lacey Keenum led a two-out rally when she reached first on an infield hit.
Stevie Griffin followed with a double to score Keenum. In the bottom of the seventh with two outs, Keenum bunted her way on base.
Griffin followed with a single to move Keenum to second, and Courtney Terry scored Keenum with a hit over the right fielder’s head.
Keenum finished 3-for-4, while Griffin was 3-for-4 with two doubles. Jenia Stephenson had a single. Breanna Lee took the mound in relief in the sixth inning to get the win, striking out four and giving up one hit.
In the second game, Calhoun won in the eight inning.
Calhoun scored in the second when Stephenson singled, stole second base, moved to third on Lee’s single and scored on Lindsey Lowey’s fielder’s choice.
With the score tied at 1 after seven innings, the teams played an International Tiebreaker. Bevill failed to score in the top of the eighth. Keenum started the inning at second base. Stevie Griffin hit a double to deep right center on the first pitch of the inning to score Keenum.
Calhoun will close out its regular season Tuesday at 2 p.m. at home with two games against Northwest-Shoals.
