Morgan County tennis power

Three Morgan County schools will have representatives at the Class 5A and 6A tournaments in Mobile this week. The 5A teams will play Monday and Tuesday, followed by 6A on Wednesday and Thursday. A brief look at the teams and players advancing:

  • Austin boys: Although the team did not advance, Alex Worley won sectionals at No. 1 singles, which qualifies him to play in that division in the 6A tournament. The last Austin boys player to make the state tournament was Nathan Smith, who made the semifinals in 2000.

  • Austin girls: The team did not make the tournament, but for the second straight year, eighth-grader Maleana McCutcheon has advanced to play No. 1 singles in the 6A field. She made the quarterfinals last year.

  • Decatur girls: The Lady Red Raiders will play in the 5A tournament. Their last state appearance came in 2005 when they finished sixth in 6A.

  • Hartselle boys: The Tigers are making their second straight appearance in the 5A tournament after finishing ninth last year. Four who played in that tournament are still in the lineup Anthony Penick, Alex Brown, A.J. McNutt and Jeremy Roper.

  • Hartselle girls: Although the Lady Tigers did not earn a berth, Candice Light did at No. 1 singles by winning sectionals. This is her first trip to the state tournament.
