MOULTON — Lawrence County High golf coach Jack Harris could only shake his head and tip his hat to the top finishers in the Class 4A, Section 4 boys tournament at Deer Run Golf Course in Moulton on Tuesday.

Unfortunately for Harris, the top two teams advancing to the state championships don't include his Red Devils.

"This is an extremely, extremely tough section," said Harris, who also served as the section tournament coordinator.

"From top to bottom, it's the toughest in the state. This year's competition was the closest in years."

Close, it was.

Central-Florence shot a 297 to win, while Haleyville was close behind at 298.

They will play at the 4A state tournament May 14-15 at the Grand National Golf Club in Opelika.

Wilson is staying home despite shooting a 299.

Seven-time defending sectional champion Brooks was fourth in the 13-team field at 304.

Harris' squad posted a 329.

"I thought a 310 would get us a trip to state, but I was wrong," Harris said. "Our 329 is not a terrible score, but some schools really hit it good today."

His team finished eighth.

A 310 would have been good enough for fifth this year.

Central-Florence coach Steve Mayfield said he also thought a 310 might be good enough for second.

"When I got here this morning, I thought a 305 or 310 would take second place," Mayfield said.

"But the kids took advantage of good weather conditions and came through. Three of our kids shot the best rounds they've ever shot at sectionals. I'm extremely proud of them all."

Central sophomore Justin Rice was the sectional medalist with 71.

He won a playoff with Spencer Pace of Brooks for the medalist honor.

Rice also edged ninth-grade teammate Garrett Mayfield by a stroke for the honor.

For Central, senior Josh Brown had 74 and Nick Robinson had his section-best 80.

Pace and Wilson's Colby Whitehead (72) earned trips to the state as individuals.

Freshman Brett Wilson of Priceville carded 74 to be the low individual among area
golfers. Lawrence County's Kyle West fired 78, and Alex Goodwin of East Limestone shot 80.
