Kim Collis and Hannah Weatherford grabbed hold of the orange water cooler and made their way toward Mike Pline.
But somewhere along the line, as Decatur girls soccer coach Pline dashed the other direction, things went awry for Collis and Weatherford.
As they tried to douse Pline with a victory splash, they fell, spilling the contents of the cooler on the field at Ogle Stadium.
Decatur's day went much better on the field, where the Lady Red Raiders picked up the school's first postseason win in boys or girls soccer with a 5-0 beating of Cullman in the Class 5A state playoffs. Decatur will go to Fort Payne on Saturday for a second-round match.
"It's an honor to be the team to make history," Decatur freshman Sally Adams said. "We were sad the guys couldn't win but I'm glad one of the two Decatur teams will represent us."
Adams played a large role in Decatur's triumph, assisting on two goals and scoring one of her own. But in the first 20 minutes, she said her teammates were playing tight.
"I think we were all a little nervous," Adams said. "We were talking about how we had to play good and that was a lot of pressure on ourselves. But when we loosened up, we got going."
