Hartselle slashes opponents to
claim Area 13 softball crown

The Decatur High Lady Red Raiders used fresh energy to get off to a winning start in hosting the Class 5A, Area 16 softball tournament on Thursday.

Decatur sophomore Mollie Russell returned from an ankle injury, pitching the Lady Red Raiders to a 2-0 win over Russellville, earning Decatur a spot in Friday's finals.

Russell tossed a one-hitter and struck out five in six innings. "It was good to have (Russell) excited and ready to go," Decatur coach Ashley Mueller said. "It kind of gave us some freshness. It was good to have her back."

Decatur (38-19) will play Muscle Shoals on Friday at 4 p.m. for the championship at Decatur's Kiwanis Field.

The Lady Red Raiders will have a chance to avenge a loss to the Lady Trojans, who dealt Decatur its only 5A, Area 16 blemish in the regular season.

"Our game plan is to take one game at a time no matter who's on the field with us," Mueller said.

Against Russellville, senior catcher Whitney Fletcher scored in the fourth inning and Scarlett Wright scored in the sixth to seal the win. Fletcher and Jennifer Lawrence each had two singles. Russell and Wright each hit one single. Jelisa Thompson and Lindsey Hawkins each knocked in a run.

Hartselle 13, Cullman 0: The Lady Tigers completed a three-win day with the Class 5A, Area 13 championship.

Hosting the area tournament, Hartselle outscored opponents 39-0 for the title.

With the win, Hartselle (50-14) advances to host a best 2-of-3 sub-state series Tuesday.

Kristy Pevahouse had two singles, scored twice and added an RBI in the championship game.

Haley Miller had a single with two RBIs and scored two runs for the Lady Tigers.

Also for Hartselle, Michel Fields had a pair of RBIs.

Hartselle's Breanna Segars pitched the first two innings, striking out one batter and allowing no hits, before being relieved by Mary Curtis, who struck out two and allowed one hit in the final three innings.

Hartselle 10, Cullman 0: Segars tossed a one-hitter, striking out 10 in the Lady Tigers' first of two wins over Cullman on Thursday.

Segars also had a double and a single with a pair of RBIs in the win.

Hartselle's Chandler Orr hit a triple and a single with two RBIs and scored three runs.

Catie Keel had three singles with two RBIs and scored twice. Fields singled and knocked in two runs.

Hartselle 16, Brewer 0: Orr's two-run homer highlighted a big game for the Lady Tigers at the plate.

Orr also hit a single and scored another run for Hartselle.

Whitley Collins had a double and a single with two RBIs and scored twice for the Lady Tigers.

Fields had two singles, drove in three runs and scored one run.

Curtis got the win, allowing two hits and striking out one batter in four innings.

Bob Jones 13, Austin 3: Haley Barnette knocked a two-run homer and a single, but it wasn't enough for the Lady Black Bears in the Class 6A, Area 16 tournament at Sparkman High's field.

"We beat Bob Jones 2-0 last week, but they hit the ball today," Austin coach Butch Wright said. "They got two hits against us last week and they got 12 or 13 today. They came ready."

Austin (21-33) will play host Sparkman on Friday at 2 p.m. as tournament play continues.

"We play one of the best teams in the state, playing Sparkman," Wright said. "But if we play like we're capable, we can play with them. Our girls will come ready — I know they will."

Against Bob Jones, Amy Anderson and Libby Ann Olinger each scored a run for Austin.

Rebecca Stephenson and Sarah Corn each hit two singles for the Lady Black Bears. Anderson added a double.

West Morgan 11, Tanner 1: The Lady Rebels took a pair of games to open the Class 2A, Area 15 tournament at Hatton on Thursday.

West Morgan (41-13) will play the winner of Hatton/Tanner in the finals Friday at 6 p.m.

Against Tanner, Ashley Thorn paced the Lady Rebels at the plate, hitting three singles with four RBIs.

Sara Hulvey had a triple and three RBIs for West Morgan, and Whitlee Potter had a double.

Also for the Lady Rebels, Lauryn Kilgo contributed a single and an RBI.

Lauren Seibert earned the win, striking out seven batters in six innings.

West Morgan 3, Hatton 2: With two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, Kilgo drove in Hannah Harris for the game-winning run.

Kilgo had three singles in the contest and also scored a run.

Rachel Harbin had a single for West Morgan, and Mikaila Etheredge scored a run for the Lady Rebels.

Seibert struck out six, earning the win on the mound.

Lawrence County 11, Fairview 1: The host Lady Red Devils earned a pair of convincing wins at Alexander Park on Thursday to advance to the finals of the Class 4A, Area 15 tournament.

Lawrence County (43-14) will meet the winner of East Lawrence/Priceville in the finals Friday at 5 p.m.

Summer Wilkerson and Whitney Hood each contributed a double, a single and two RBIs in the win for Lawrence County.

Ashley Pitt had a triple and a single with an RBI, and Amber Dutton hit a single and drove in a run.

Also for the Lady Red Devils, Sallie Beth Burch hit a single and knocked in two runs.

Morgan Smith had a single and Kassie Terry delivered an RBI.

Kaylyn Smith allowed no hits in three innings, striking out three batters, before being relived by Pitt, who struck out two in the final three innings.

Lawrence County 7, Priceville 1: Smith pitched a two-hitter, striking out seven in six innings for the Lady Red Devils.

Jackson, Burch and Morgan Smith each had a double and a single in the win.

Burch and Smith each drove in a run for the Lady Red Devils.

Hood and Ragan Fleming each delivered a double and an RBI for Lawrence County, while Terry also hit a double.

Terry had a double, while Pitt had a single and drove in a run.

Dutton and Shae Lane each had a single for the Lady Red Devils.

Priceville's Caitlin Williams hit a double and a triple with an RBI, and Sumer Boyd had a single and scored the Lady Bulldogs' lone run.
