HARTSELLE — Hartselle High fell to Sparkman 26-21 in a spring football game Friday night at J.P. Cain Stadium.

However, the Tigers shone in the most important part of the scrimmage — they won the first half 14-10, when the two varsities squared off.

The junior varsities played in the second half.

In the opening quarter, Hartselle’s Montrell Murphy scored on a 2-yard run, and in the second period, Marquez Jones scored on a 13-yard pass from Luke Bole. Tyler Bennich kicked both extra points for the Tigers.

Sparkman got its 10 points on a touchdown, an extra point and a 31-yard field goal.

In the second half, Hartselle’s Malcolm Forrest rushed 36 yards for a touchdown, and Judd Roberts kicked an extra point for a 21-10 lead.

Sparkman followed with 16 points, including a 40-yard touchdown pass with a second remaining.

For Hartselle, Murphy gained 64 rushing yards, and Tony Weaver gained 76 in receiving. Bole completed 10 of 12 passes for 120 yards.

Hartselle coaches also credited Michael Reed, Brad Borden and Dane Burgess as playing well defensively.
