From Staff Reports

Mountain Brook High hosted the state high school decathlon meet Monday and Tuesday, and the school has had nine winners in the competition since it began in 1964.

But this year's championship belongs to North Alabama.

East Lawrence's Dakota Matthews took the championship. Falkville's Cody Sewell finished second to give the Morgan and Lawrence counties a sweep of the top two spots.

"I am so proud of both of these boys because the competition is so strong at that level," Falkville coach Karen Wilemon said.

Nobody from East Lawrence has won the state decathlon.

In fact, according to Alabama High School Athletic Association records, nobody competing for a Lawrence or Morgan county school has won the championship.

Shane Edge from Falkville also competed and finished 11th.

This meet included about 40 athletes. They competed over a two-day period in 10 events, including the 100-meter dash, the 110-meter hurdles, 400-meter dash, 1,500-meter run, shot put, discus, high jump, pole vault, long jump and javelin.
