MONTGOMERY — The Danville High softball team was "up and ready to go" at 7 a.m. Friday morning, according to junior Mallory George.

After arriving in Montgomery for the state softball tournament Thursday night, George said her team was determined to overcome last year's two-games-and-out finish in the double-elimination tournament at Lagoon Park.

Class 3A Danville credited clean play with its success, picking up a 7-2 win over West Blocton, before falling to Mobile Christian 13-2 in an eight-team field Friday.

The Lady Hawks will face Leeds at 9 a.m. Saturday in the losers' bracket.

"A lot of the teams here are about even," senior catcher/leadoff batter Bethany Evans said. "Usually the team that doesn't make errors does well."

With a noon start time Friday, Danville scored all seven of its runs in the fifth inning for the win over West Blocton.

"This morning they played great," Danville coach Holly Little said. "We had that big inning that broke it wide open for us."

West Blocton went up 1-0 in the second inning and the Lady Tigers scored again in the top of the fifth for a 2-0 advantage before the Lady Hawks' bats started.

Sarah Terry drove in Morgan Doherty and Whitney Haggamaker in the bottom of the fifth, tying the score.

Terry put up the go-ahead run on a single by Evans and the Lady Hawks led 3-2.

Evans took home when West Blocton overthrew first base, trying to put out Nichole Linderman, giving Danville a 4-2 lead.

Linderman, Sarah Stephenson and Kristen Sparkman added the final runs for the Lady Hawks.

Mobile Christian 13, Danville 2: The five-inning loss sent Danville into the losers' bracket, as the Lady Hawks suffered the kind of offensive explosion from Mobile Christian that Danville used in its opening win.

The Lady Leopards' seven-run fourth inning was too much for the Lady Hawks to overcome.

Mobile Christian took an early 2-0 lead. Danville responded by loading the bases with no outs in the bottom of the
first.

Evans scored on an run-scoring single by Thompson before Linderman tied the score at 2, but it's all Danville's offense would produce.

Mobile Christian scored three runs in the third to grab a 5-2 lead.

Mobile Christian's Laura Callaway blasted a three-run homer in the fourth for an 8-2 advantage. The Lady Leopards built a 12-2 lead before the inning ended and went up 13-2 in the fifth, cutting the contest short due to the 10-run rule.

Danville's Sparkman, George and Kelsey Bell each contributed a single.

Friday’s championship finals

The Alabama High School Athletic Association crowned softball state champions in Class 2A, 4A and 6A on Friday at Montgomery’s Lagoon Park. Class 1A, 3A and 5A finals will be at the conclusion of bracket play Saturday night.

Class 2A championship: Oakman 2-8, J.B. Pennington 5-5.

Class 4A championship: Alabama Christian 2-3, St. James 1-2.

Class 6A championship: Baker 4-5, Sparkman 6-1.
