Spirit 5-mile run

The Spirit of America 5-mile run and 1-mile fun run will occur June 30 at Point Mallard Park. The final 2.7 miles of the 5-mile event is on the shaded jogging path along the river.

The 5-mile race will start at 7 a.m. with the 1-mile starting at approximately 8 a.m. Awards, t-shirt and refreshments are provided. Entry fees are $10 and $5 before the entry deadline of June 22. The fees double after June 22.

  • The Red Sox of the Hartselle Dixie Youth program are the 5- and 6-year-old champions for the regular season. They compiled a record of 13-2-1.

    Players are Chris Segars, Andy Lamb, Luke Godsey, Stone Powell, Tucker Hayes, Jonathan Carnes, Issac Holcomb, Tyde Ward, Jarrod Galloway, Carson Rose and Ryan Langston.

    David Langston is the head coach. Assistant coaches are Bob Godsey, Jeff Hayes, Ron Lamb and Will Powell.

  • The Viper Baseball Academy 15-and-under team won the Tiger Classic tournament last weekend in Chattanooga with a 4-0-1 record.

    The Vipers will play in the Slumpbuster’s Baseball tournament in Omaha, Neb., during the College World Series.

    The squad includes Shane Culbreath (Andalusia), Wesley Hughes (Huntsville), Brian Moody (Huntsville), Clint Brown (Huntsville), Duncan Harrity (Huntsville), Colt Iverson (Decatur), Josh Carpenter (Huntsville), Aaron Haag (Andalusia), Josh Cyr (Huntsville) and C.K. Irby (Florence).

  • Auburn-Montgomery will hold its annual youth baseball camps at the AUM Baseball Complex on June 25-29 and July 16-20 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. The camps are open to boys and girls of all ages.

    Registration fee is $125.

    Instruction in all phases of the game will be provided by Head Coach Q.V. Lowe and his staff.

  • The Decatur Parks and Recreation Summer Basketball Camp for girls and boys will be Monday through Friday.

    Decatur High varsity basketball coaches Jamie Lee and Brad Boy, along with Austin coaches Demond Garth and Bruce Hamilton will conduct the camp for upcoming kindergarten through ninth-graders.

    The cost is $80 a player.

    The camp will run from 8 a.m. until noon each day.

    Late registration and orientation will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Aquadome Recreation Center.

  • The Cowart Basketball Camp is set for July 23-27 in Athens. All campers, grades 1-7, will receive a T-shirt and drink each day. Prizes will be given for effort and improvement at the camp designed to provide instructions of the fundamentals of basketball. Campers should bring a basketball with their name on it. The first 100 campers to sign up will receive a free basketball.

    Cost is $55 per player until July 14 and $65 after July 14. Instructors are Eddie Murphree, Garland Murphree and Robert Bess.

  • Hazlewood High will host The Leather Helmet Football Camp on June 23, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Hazlewood’s athletic fields.

    The camp is for ages 7-18 and costs $40.

    The camp will have several guest instructors, including former football stars Robert Penchion (Bills and 49ers offensive lineman), Zefross Moss (Colts offensive lineman), Antonio Langham (Brown and Ravens defensive back), Chris Goode (Colts defensive back), Ben Leard (Auburn quarterback), Andrew Zow (Alabama quarterback), Joe Cribbs (Bills running back), Kerry Goode (Bucs running back), Steve Wallace (49ers offensive lineman), Thomas Rayam (Alabama defensive lineman), Calvin Pearson (Bucs defensive back) and Jason Allen (defensive back Miami Dolphins).

  • The SportsPowers preseason kicking and punting camp will be at Mountain Brook High School on July 16-17.

    The camp is open to players ages 13 and above. Cost per camper is $200.

  • Area qualifying for the Optimist International Junior Golf Championships will be Monday and Tuesday at the Valley Landing Golf Course in Courtland. Age divisions for boys and girls are 10-11, 12-13, 14-15 and 16-18.

    Registration fee is $80. Deadline is Saturday. Lunch is provided on tournament days. A practice round, at no additional fee, is Sunday. Players must make reservations for the practice round.

  • The Northwest Youth Athletic Association will host a golf tournament at Point Mallard on June 23. Registration for the two-man scramble is at 7 a.m. on June 23.

    Entry fee is a $50 donation.

    The second annual Safety Scramble golf tournament will be July 17 at Southern Gayles Golf Club. Shotgun is at 8 a.m.

  • The first fundraiser golf tournament for Evan’s Ark Ministries will be Saturday at Quail Creek Golf Course in Hartselle. Shotgun start is at 7:45 a.m. Price per team is $220.

    Lunch will be provided for players and volunteers. Prizes will be awarded for top four places, closest to pin, longest drive and hole in ones.

    All proceeds will go to benefit a camp/ministry for handicapped and special needs children.

  • Signups for football, soccer and cheerleading players and coaches for the fall season in the Priceville Community Recreation Association will be Saturday and June 16 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Priceville Elementary School cafeteria.

  • The River City Raptors women’s soccer club of Decatur have set its tryout dates for the fall season. The club’s regular season will run from Aug. 18 through Nov. 3. Tryouts will be at the Jack Allen Recreation Complex on June 10. Tryouts will be for ages under 9 through under 18. For more information visit

  • Players interested in playing in the Hartselle soccer youth leagues should register during June at the Sparkman Civic Center. Registration is 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. every Monday.

    First-time players are encouraged to bring a birth certificate to registration.

  • The Alabama Youth Soccer Association Soccer Camp will be July 23-27 at the Jack Allen Recreation Complex.

    For boys and girls ages 5 through 7, the camp is Monday through Friday from 6-8 p.m. The registration fee is $55 payable to AYSA.

    For boys and girls ages 8 through 13, the camp is Monday through Friday from 8:30-11:30 a.m. The registration fee is $75 payable to AYSA.

  • Playtime softball won its fourth tournament of the year recently in Birmingham by capturing the USSSA Bat Bag Shootout. Playtime went undefeated.

    The team members were Jason Such, Quientin Mclin, Al Long, Lajuan Johnson, Jason Houston, Al Mayers, James Bud Warren, Lil Charles Hollis, Will Weakley, Russ Alexander, Scott Rutherford, Lavoris White and Warren White. The head coach was Randy Turner, and the assistant coach was Marshall Healty.

    Also, the Capt D’s/Playtime Co-ed tournament went undefeated in the Memorial Day Classic in Hamilton.

    The team members were Will Weakley, Jeff Redus, Jack Cook, Jason Houston, Quientin Mclin, Short Martin, Ricky Turner, Russ Alexander, Stephanie Cook, Kelly Martin, Brenda “Punk” Phillips, Leslie Dobbs and Doris Williams. The head coach was Randy Turner.

  • The Morgan County Park and Recreation Department is looking for slowpitch church league teams to be played at South Park in Falkville.

  • The Spirit of America ASA softball tournament is set for June 29 through July 1 at the Wilson Morgan softball complex in Decatur.

    Divisions and limitations include Men’s B (four homers); Men’s C (two homers); Men’s D (homer ends inning); and women’s.

    Entry fee is $175 a team. Deadline is noon June 25 or until the fields are full.

  • The SEAA girls slowpitch softball tournament will be June 23-24 at the Cane Creek fields in Cookeville, Tenn.
