Decatur Daily’s Class 4A-6A All-area Baseball Selections

Player of the year

OF: Ty Chancelor, Austin, Sr.: Hit .475 for the Black Bears, including 11 home runs this season. His 67 hits set a single-season school record for Austin. The solid center fielder also delivered a team-leading 17 doubles, knocked in 39 runs and scored 53 runs as Austin reached the Class 6A state playoffs.

First team

P: J.C. Bates, Hartselle, Jr.: Hartselle’s ace went 11-4 on the mound with a 1.61 ERA. Also recorded two saves for the Tigers. Struck out 82 batters in 83 2/3 innings pitched as Hartselle advanced to the second round of the Class 5A state playoffs.

P: Chad Girodo, Hartselle, So.: The left-handed hurler struck out 73 batters in 68 innings pitched for the Tigers. Went 4-4 with a save against top competition as Hartselle reached the second round of the Class 5A state playoffs.

P: Wes Holley, Lawrence County, Jr.: Lawrence County’s most feared weapon on the mound. Threw in the upper 80’s mph, going 8-2 as a starter for the Red Devils with a 1.17 ERA and had a save. Also cracked 11 home runs and had 32 RBIs as Lawrence County reached the second round of the Class 4A state playoffs.

P: Colin McMurry, Athens, Jr.: Struck out 69 batters in 53 1/3 innings pitched this season. The left-hander rebounded from shoulder surgery last year for a 1.97 ERA this season, going 6-4 on the mound for the Golden Eagles.

C: Eric Atchley, Ardmore, Sr.: Tigers’ leader at the plate hit .532 this season with 14 doubles.
Also a two-year starter behind the plate for Ardmore.

IF: John Frost, Decatur, So.: Led Decatur at the plate, hitting .420 with 55 hits and 46 RBIs. The first baseman also scored a team-best 42 runs and had 15 doubles, six home runs and two triples.

IF: Rand Hutchison, Priceville, Sr.: Had 41 hits and scored 46 runs while playing third base for the Bulldogs. Batted .390 with 13 doubles and five home runs this season.

IF: Jake McCay, Austin, Sr.: Playing second base for the Black Bears, hit .412 as Austin reached the Class 6A state playoffs. His 54 hits included 14 doubles, five home runs and 41 RBIs. Also scored 37 runs for the Black Bears.

IF: Matthew Pugh, Lawrence County, Jr.: The shortstop hit .404, including three home runs for Lawrence County, who reached the second round of the Class 4A state playoffs. Also went 6-2 as a pitcher for the Red Devils.

IF: Tyler Spivey, Decatur, Jr.: Played first base for the Red Raiders, batting .393, including 11 doubles and 29 RBIs. Had 42 hits and scored 27 runs for Decatur this season.

OF: Zack Brock, Athens, Sr.: Batted .388 with six homers for Athens this year. Knocked in 46 runs for the Golden Eagles.

OF: Matt Croft, Priceville, Jr.: The Bulldogs’ center fielder hit .465 and scored 68 runs this season. His 53 hits included 20 doubles and five home runs. Also stole 25 bases.

OF: Quinn Dunlap, Hartselle, Sr.: The center fielder had 45 hits, including 17 doubles and 20 RBIs, while batting .315. Scored 50 runs for the Tigers, who reached the second round of the Class 5A state playoffs.

OF: Laken Laughmiller, Austin, Sr.: Blasted 10 home runs this season among 30 hits and 34 RBIs. Also had eight doubles and scored 22 runs, batting .306 as the Black Bears advanced to the Class 6A state playoffs.

OF: Jared Laxson, East Limestone, So.: Two-year starter for the Indians at center field. Batted leadoff, hitting .430 as East Limestone reached the first round of the 4A playoffs this season.

UTL: Dustin Chambers, Priceville, Sr.: Had an 8-1 record on the mound for the Bulldogs, but also played first base and batted .403 this season and scored 51 runs. Smashed 15 home runs and his 50 hits also included 11 doubles and 49 RBIs.

DH: Russ Stephenson, East Lawrence, Sr.: Hit .538 for the Eagles this season with a slugging percentage of .832. Smacked four home runs and drove in 31 runs.

Athens: Kyle Chronister; Austin: Ben Bullard and Russ Sandlin; Brewer: Eric Parker; Decatur: Will Dennis, Alex Gist, Blaine Ingram and William Sartain; East Lawrence: Tyler Boyd and Blake Terry; East Limestone: Matthew Bailey and Corey Dunn; Hartselle: Justin Hargett, Will Rankin and Tony Weaver; Lawrence County: Josh Gaines, Will Inman, Radney Wallace, Coty Way and Britt White; Priceville: Kyle Bunnell, Lance Hughes and Will Stevens.
