DECATUR DAILY ALL-AREA TENNIS TEAM

Boys player of the year

Alex Worley, Austin, So.: Compiled an 11-3 record at No. 1 singles and won his division in the Class 6A, Section 8 tournament. Reached the quarterfinals of the 6A state tournament. Combined with Kyle Smith to go 12-2 at No. 1 doubles and reach the sectional finals. Made all-area first team in 2005 and '06.

Rest of the team

Alex Brown, Hartselle, Jr.: Played No. 2 singles, finished 11-1 in the regular season and won his division in the 5A, Section 4 tournament. Played No. 1 doubles with Anthony Penick and made the finals at the 5A state tournament, where Hartselle placed seventh. Made all-area first team in 2006.

Taylor Collins, Austin, Sr.: Compiled a 9-5 record at No. 5 singles. Reached the semifinals in his singles division at the 6A, Section 8 tournament.

Chris Connor, Hartselle, Sr.: Finished 9-4 in the regular season at No. 6 singles and won his division in the 5A, Section 4 tournament.

Blake Garrett, Decatur, Sr.: Finished 7-5 at No. 6 singles and 8-4 at No. 3 doubles with teammate Graham Powell. Placed second in both singles and doubles in the 5A, Section 6 tournament.

John Landers, Hartselle, Jr.: Compiled a 6-3 regular-season mark at No. 5 singles. Won the 5A, Section 6 tournament in his division and made the semifinals of the 5A state tournament.

Anthony Penick, Hartselle, Sr.: Played No. 1 singles, compiling a 10-3 regular-season record. Finished runner-up in the 5A, Section 4 tournament. Reached the finals at No. 1 doubles in the 5A state tournament with teammate Alex Brown. Made all-area first team in 2005 and '06.

Graham Powell, Decatur, So.: Finished with an 7-5 record at No. 5 singles. Placed second in at the 5A, Section 6 tournament in No. 5 singles and teamed with Blake Garrett to reach the doubles finals in the 5A, Section 6 tournament.

Jeremy Roper, Hartselle, Jr.: Won No. 4 singles at the 5A, Section 4 tournament and finished with a 10-3 regular-season record.

Kyle Smith, Austin, Jr.: Went 12-2 at No. 2 singles to lead his team in singles victories. Won the 6A, Section 8 championship at No. 2 singles with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Huntsville's Nathan Roberts. Went 12-2 in doubles with Alex Worley and reached the sectional finals. Made all-area first team in 2006.

Johnson Trent, Athens, So.: Played No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles and finished with a singles record of about .500.

Austin: Kyle Justice; Athens: Corey Smith; Decatur: Jonathan Rodgers and Christopher Fite; Hartselle:A.J. McNutt.

Girls player of the year

Meleana McCutcheon, Austin, 8th grade: Compiled a 13-1 regular-season record at No. 1 singles. Won the Austin and Benjamin Russell tournaments. Won the 6A, Section 8 championship in her singles division. Won two rounds at the 6A state tournament in No. 1 singles before falling to eventual finalist Morgan Carney of McGill-Toolen in three sets. Posted 9-4 record at No. 1 doubles with teammate Elizabeth Cargile. Was player of the year in 2006.

Burgoyne Fite, Decatur, So.: Finished 10-3 in the regular-season at No. 6 singles and finished second at the 5A, Section 6 tournament. Teamed with Sarah Suggs to go 13-0 in the regular season at No. 3 doubles and win the sectional championship.

Sarah Hodges, Decatur, Sr.: Played No. 2 singles, went 12-1 in the regular season, finished runner-up at the 5A, Section 6 tournament and reached the semifinals at the 5A state tournament, where Decatur placed seventh. Won the Austin tournament at No. 2 singles. Teamed with Angee Stevens at No. 1 doubles, finishing second at sectionals and reaching the state semifinals. Made all-area first team in 2005 and '06.

Katie Kilgore, Hartselle, So.: Finished 4-8 in the regular season at No. 3 singles but rallied at the end of the year to win her division at the 5A, Section 4 tournament. Reached the semifinals at No. 1 doubles with teammate Candice Light.

Katie Klein, Athens Bible, Sr.: Played No. 1 singles and had 5-4 regular-season record. Made it to the 1A-3A state quarterfinals in her division. Played No. 1 doubles with Anna Bryant and finished 5-4, reaching the sectional finals. Made all-area first team in 2005 and '06.

Candice Light, Hartselle, Jr.: Finished 10-2 in the regular season at No. 1 singles. Won the 5A, Section 4 championship in her division and reached the quarterfinals of the 5A state tournament. Made all-area first team in 2005 and '06.

Rachel Rosales, Athens, So.: Played No. 2 doubles and finished the regular season with a 7-2 record. Made all-area first team in 2006.

Mary Virginia Sherrill, Decatur, So.: Finished 11-2 at No. 3 singles and placed second in her division at the 5A, Section 6 tournament. Won the Austin tournament in her division. Won the section at No. 2 doubles with teammate Emily Suggs. Made all-area first team in 2006.

Angee Stevens, Sr., Decatur: Only tennis player ever to make Decatur Daily all-area five times. Compiled 48-12 singles mark in five years on Lady Raiders' varsity, including 10-2 this year at No. 1. Won 5A, Section 6 championship at No. 1 singles, which was her third career sectional championship in singles. Reached section finals in No. 1 doubles with Sarah Hodges and made the semifinals at the 5A state tournament.

Emily Suggs, Decatur, So.: Played No. 4 singles and went 11-2 in the regular season. Finished second in the 5A, Section 6 tournament in her division. Won the section at No. 2 doubles with teammate Mary Virginia Sherrill.

Sarah Suggs, Sr., Decatur: Won 5A, Section 6 titles at No. 5 singles and No. 3 doubles with teammate Burgoyne Fite. Finished 10-3 during the regular season in singles and 13-0 in doubles. Made all-area first team in 2005 and '06.

Athens: Betsy Butler and Brock Brett; Athens Bible: Anna Bryant; Austin: Elizabeth Cargile and Rachel King; Hartselle: Kelsey Jensen and Dana Watson.
