2 Decatur Major teams set for showdown
By Paul Stackhouse
A Major showdown is set to take place Monday at Hartselle’s Sparkman Park.
A pair of rivals, Decatur American and Decatur National, are scheduled to face off at 6 p.m. in the Dixie Youth Baseball Major division all-star tournament, which covers the 11- and 12-year-old age group. This is a district tournament, and both teams have advanced through two rounds of play without a loss.
The tournament is an “ozone” event, which means that players may lead off the base before the pitch reaches the batter.
Decatur American has scored consecutive wins over Athens National and Hartselle American, while Decatur National has defeated Morgan County East and Morgan County West.
The Americans beat Hartselle American 17-12 in a game that didn’t end until early Sunday morning because of a rain delay. Winning pitcher Blake Hall had a grand slam and a single, while Chris Sparkman and Chad Steelman each had three-run homers.
The Nationals won Saturday 9-3, but only after a three-hour rain delay. The game didn’t end until around 1 a.m.
Two other district tournament games are on tap Monday as well. Both are set for North Park in Priceville and are elimination games. Athens National is scheduled to play Morgan County West at 6 p.m., while Athens American will face Hartselle American at 8.
The remainder of the tournament will be played in Hartselle.
In the 7- and 8-year-old district tournament at the Athens Sportsplex, two games are slated for Monday night at 6 p.m. Hartselle American will face Athens National, and Morgan County Central and Morgan American West will meet.
In the 8 p.m. game, Hartselle National will take on Decatur American.
Decatur National, which has a bye through Monday’s action, will play the Hartselle National-Decatur American winner Tuesday night at 8 p.m.
In 9- and 10-year-old sub-district tournament play Monday at Point Mallard, Decatur National is scheduled to play Morgan County at 6 p.m. Hartselle and Athens will follow at 8 p.m.
The Dixie Boys Baseball District 1 East tournament for 13- and 14-year-olds is slated to begin Friday at 5:30 p.m. at the Cedar Ridge Middle School fields. Brackets for the tournament will be announced later.
