Decatur American all-stars win 2 to advance

Needing back-to-back wins to claim the District 1 East championship, the Decatur American 14-year-old all-stars knew they had a long road in front of them at the Cedar Ridge Middle School baseball fields Saturday night.

Decatur American rose to the occasion and proceeded to win the first game 10-0 before closing the door on Colbert County with a 8-3 victory in the nightcap.

With the wins, the Decatur American 14-year-olds find they have another road to travel — the road to the state tournament Friday in Fayette.

After having lost two games in the district tournament, the Decatur American 13-year-old all-stars received another opportunity to stake a claim in the state tournament Friday in Athens. A wild-card tournament was at the Cedar Ridge fields between Decatur American, Lawrence County and Hamilton.

The Decatur American 13-year-olds received a bye in the first round, leaving Lawrence County and Hamilton to battle for rights into the final round. Lawrence County rolled to a 8-3 win, leaving one more game to decide the wild-card winner.

The final game of the 13-year-old division showed excellent defense on both sides as Decatur American won the championship with a 4-2 victory.

The tournament championship was scheduled for Alexander Park in Moulton but afternoon rains forced it to be moved to Decatur.

Decatur American 14-year-olds 10, Colbert County 0: Decatur won the contest in five inning due to the 10-run mercy rule.

David Bookout pitched five innings to take the win on the mound for Decatur American. Bookout allowed seven hits while striking out two and walking one.

Ty Keenum led Decatur at the plate with a double. Dylan Woods, Devin Wynn and Thomas Russell had two singles each with Spencer Beasley and Ethan Walker finishing with a single each.

Decatur American 14-year-olds 8, Colbert County 3: Decatur had only three hits in the game, but a stout defensive effort kept Colbert County from any kind of a rally.

Woods, Russell and Beasley each had one single.

Conner Graves pitched two innings to take the win. Graves gave up four hits while striking out one and walking two.

The Decatur American 14-year-olds are scheduled to play at 5 p.m. Friday in Fayette.

Decatur American 13-year-olds 4, Lawrence County 2: Sam Roberts led Decatur at the plate with a double and a single. Michael Bray finished the game with one single.

Tyler Burden had two singles for Lawrence County, while Nolan Coffey, Taylor Glenn, Chris Golden and Colin Terry each had a single.

Shane Prewitt picked up the win for Decatur American. Prewitt pitched four innings, allowing no hits while striking out three and walking three.

15-16-year-olds

Over the Mountain 9, Decatur 8: Matthew Poole went 3-for-3 with three singles and one RBI for Decatur in the state tournament in Guntersville. Caleb Brown had two singles and Scott Peyton, Hunter Rivers, Jake Morgan and Colton Cartee each had one single for Decatur.

Decatur will play Boaz at 11 a.m. Sunday and Guntersville at 5 p.m. in pool play.
