ATHENS — The Hartselle 13-year-old all-stars knew it was win or go home Saturday night in the state baseball tournament at the Athens
Sportsplex.

They took those words to heart and battled back from the losers’ bracket with a 9-2 victory over Boaz.

“After we lost last night, we knew we had to come out and get a win,” Jacob Garrison said. “It feels good to finally get that win under our belts.”

Boaz got on the board early in the first after a run from Brett Willoughby, giving it a 1-0 lead. Boaz’s only other run came in the second when Jonathan Nixon scored.

Hartselle got the bats going in the top of the third after Dalton Stisher drew a walk. A single by Michael Robinson moved him to third. Ryan Brown’s double scored Stisher and Robinson, tying the game at 2.

“Scoring those two runs really helped us become more confident in each other,” Brown said. “The all-around team effort is what helped us win.”

The game stayed tied until the seventh inning, when Hartselle’s Reese Ashwander drew a walk to put the winning run on base. Robinson singled and another single by Brown scored Ashwander, giving Hartselle the 3-2 lead with no outs.

Kameron Wallace’s ground-rule double brought in two making the score 5-2.

Landin Henderson’s triple scored Brown and Wallace, giving Hartselle two more runs.

Hartselle managed to score two more times before ending the inning.

“We’ve bonded together quick and formed relationships. We know we can depend on each other,” Hartselle’s Colby Nelson said. “Hopefully if we play the way we did tonight, we can come out with another win.”

Hartselle will take on Taylorville on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Athens Sportsplex.

Decatur American 8, DeKalb 6: A combined pitching performance from five Decatur American pitchers helped Decatur win.

Mitchael Bray’s triple in the first scored Knox Hastings, putting Decatur American up.

Sam Roberts reached base in the third inning after being hit by a pitch. Hastings reached base on an error, scoring Roberts. Walks to Todd Paysinger, Bryant Hutchinson and Bray all led to scores in the fourth inning.

Paysigner and John Melson drew walks to begin the fifth inning. A fielder’s choice by Chris Foster scored Paysinger, giving Decatur American its eighth run of the game.

Decatur American will take on Cherokee County on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Athens 10, Cherokee County 0: Hunter Day led things off for Athens in the first with a single.

Casey Thomas drew a walk and later scored on a double by Jordan Crow.

Athens managed to score a combined six runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Day’s triple in the sixth scored Chase Shoulders and D.J. Buchheister, giving Athens two more runs to end the game.

In Saturday’s other game, Underwood defeated Taylorville 4-3.

Athens will play Monday at 9 a.m.
