Austin, Danville claim volleyball victories

Austin High’s volleyball team got a pair of home wins Monday, defeating Hartselle and Hazel Green.

The Lady Black Bears beat Hartselle 18-25, 25-22, 25-14 to open the day and finished with a 25-27, 26-24, 25-22 win over Hazel Green.

“We lost the first game in both matches and came back,” Austin coach Tina Lawrence said. “They just pulled together, and it was a total team effort. We are just getting better all the time.”

Shara Foster’s 20 kills paced Austin’s winning efforts, followed by Tiera Robinson with 19 and Brittney Smith’s 14.

Lindsey Rogers’ 24 assists were a team-high for Austin, and Shanise Foster had 18.

Robinson, Smith and Rogers each had four aces, while Shara Foster and Shanise Foster had two apiece.

Shara Foster led Austin in blocks with eight, while
Shanise Foster had six and Robinson four.

Austin (5-2) is coming off a good showing among some of the top teams in the state at the Juanita Boddie Invitational Tournament in Birmingham during the weekend.

Austin will play at Brewer on Tuesday against host Brewer and Athens.

Danville gets win over Falkville: The Danville Lady Hawks beat county foe Falkville 25-17, 25-13, 25-14 in a best-of-five match Monday.

Danville (6-2) was led by Jordan Spinks’ eight kills, followed by Alaina Fitzgerald with seven and Lindsay Simmons’ five.

Fitzgerald’s 16 assists were a team best for the Lady Hawks, and Lacey Evans contributed three.

In aces, Fitzgerald had six, while Simmons had five and Spinks and Wallace each had three.

Danville will play at Lawrence County on Tuesday.
