Ducks Unlimited will honor artist at October banquet

At its annual banquet Oct. 11, the Decatur/Morgan County chapter of Ducks Unlimited will honor local artist Larry Chandler, who passed away recently.

At a recent organizational meeting, the committee had Chandler on its mind and the group wanted to do something special. DU National President Bruce Lewis of Natchez, Miss., has accepted a request to attend the banquet to make a special presentation to Chandler’s wife, Donna, and other family members.

Proceeds from this year’s event will be donated to Ducks Unlimited in Chandler’s memory.

“Larry’s support over the years was immeasurable,” local member Doug Lasher said. “That includes numerous personal appearances at DU functions around the state and nation, original artwork, thousands of prints of wildlife images for sponsor programs and countless prints and duck stamp images for auctions.

“His support was not limited to Morgan County but enjoyed and cherished across the country.”

I honestly can’t remember ever going to a DU banquet or any other local wildlife meeting without seeing some of Chandler’s work. He truly has been a special representative to the great outdoors and will be missed immensely.

The banquet has been moved to the Elks Lodge on Beltline Road in Decatur to provide more seating. Anyone interested in helping organize this year’s event, donating to its success to increase the memorial gift or just attending, call Chad Hughey at 773-8632, Kerrick Whisenant at 214-1571 or John Kuhlman at 654-5012.
