Depth helps Austin beat Brewer, Buckhorn at home

Austin High’s volleyball team had to do a bit of revamping to its lineup because of injury Monday, but the Lady Black Bears still pulled out a pair of wins over Brewer and Buckhorn in Joe Jones Gymnasium.

Austin beat Brewer 25-18, 25-16 before knocking off Buckhorn 25-22, 27-25.

“For them to come through that, I’m very pleased,” Austin coach Tina Lawrence said. “I’ve got 12 girls, and everybody has an integral part.”

Shara Foster paced the Lady Black Bears with 15 kills, while teammate Shanise Foster had 11.

Shara Foster’s 11 blocks were also team-best, while Tiera Robinson had 10. Austin’s Lindsey Rogers had a team-leading 17 assists, followed by Shanise Foster with 13.

Ali Barnett had 16 digs for the Lady Black Bears and Abi Merrill had eight.

Austin (20-8) will play at Class 6A, Area 16 foe Sparkman on Tuesday vs. Sparkman and Grissom.

Decatur sweeps West Morgan: Quita Lyle had 10 kills and Whitney Fletcher added eight as Decatur beat West Morgan 25-21, 25-12, 25-15.

Shannon Laughlin contributed 17 assists for the Lady Red Raiders (9-11), and Kate Graham and Laughlin each had eight blocks.

Kim Collis had six digs, and Fletcher added five.

Danville takes two: Danville beat West Limestone 25-12, 25-17 and got a 25-20, 25-29 win over Athens on Monday.

The Lady Hawks were led by Lindsay Simmons’ 22 kills, while Alaina Fitzgerald had 18 and Jordan Spinks 11.

Fitzgerald’s 26 assists were a team-best, while Kimberly Lindsey contributed 10 and Lacey Evans six.

In digs, Fitzgerald had a team-high 10, followed by Tara Wimberley’s six, and Spinks and Chelsea Keenum, who each had five.

Fitzgerald and Wimberley tied for a team-best four blocks.

Danville will host Falkville and Vinemont on Tuesday.

Athens Bible wins pair: Athens Bible School (17-1) beat Speake 21-25, 25-12, 25-17 and Mount Hope 25-12, 25-19.

Christina Ivey had 18 kills for the winners, while Abbie Melvin recorded 15. Hannah Owen had 19 assists, and Athena Hinkle contributed 14. Makayla Melvin led in digs with eight.
