Swayze Waters kicked a school record five field goals to lead UAB to a 22-0 victory over Alcorn State on Saturday, giving Neil Callaway his first win as the Blazerís head coach.

Brandon Thornton gained 92 yards on 21 carries to help the Blazers break an eight-game losing streak.

The shutout was UABís first since a 47-0 victory over Louisiana-Monroe in 1999.

Joseph Webb caught three passes for 62 yards and Mario Wright added three catches for 48 yards for UAB (1-2).

Nate Hughes caught five passes for 89 yards and Antoine Young ran for 69 yards on 13 carries to lead Alcorn State (0-3).

David Sigler caught a 4-yard pass from Sam Hunt for the gameís only touchdown. The score came with 19 seconds left in the quarter and gave UAB a 16-0 lead at halftime.

Waters had field goals of 42, 32 and 52 yards in the first half. The 52-yarder tied a school record for distance set by Kevin Thomason against Mississippi Valley State in 1994.

The only points of the second half came on a pair of field goals by Waters in the third quarter from 22 and 38 yards.

UAB had 332 yards of total offense while holding Alcorn State to 333 yards.

Alcorn Stateís biggest threat came when the Braves drove to the UAB 19 yard line in the second quarter, but linebacker Joe Henderson intercepted a Chris Walker pass and returned it to the UAB 40.

Rhodes 10, Birmingham-Southern 7: Chris Catalanotto kicked a 31-yard field goal with 22 seconds left to play to give Rhodes College the lead in a come-from-behind victory over Birmingham-Southern.

Rhodes (2-0 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference) had been trailing 7-0 since the second quarter when Ty Lake scored on a 13-yard pass from Mark Oliver at the 5:26 mark.

Art Quinnís low knuckle ball punt deflected off a BSC return team player and was recovered with 2:27 remaining to set up Catalanottoís kick.

Birmingham-Southern (1-1) scored when Jasper Barnett blocked Quinn and Trae Strain picked up the loose ball at the Rhodes 26 and returned it for the touchdown.

Rhodes College led BSC with 322 yards of offense to 77 yards despite losing three fumbles.

Justin Dunn led the BSC defense with 15 tackles followed by Baxter Anderson with 12 tackles and three sacks.

Fort Valley State 24, Miles 0: Garrett Williams passed for 211 yards and a touchdown and Chris Tennyson fell on a blocked punt in the end zone for another score to lead Fort Valley State to a victory over Miles.

Miles (1-3, 0-2 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) was led by Ellis George, who completed 14 of 33 passes for 234 yards.

He was intercepted three times.
