Danville takes wins from Austin, Athens but falls to Speake

Danville High’s volleyball team, a usual top contender in Class 3A, got a pair of big wins over 6A Austin and 5A Athens on Monday.

The only blemish on the day for the Lady Hawks was a loss to 1A Speake.

Danville beat Austin 13-25, 25-18, 25-22 and downed Athens 25-13, 25-14. Speake beat Danville 25-11, 25-14.

For the Lady Hawks, senior Alaina Fitzgerald led with 19 kills, while Lindsey Simmons followed with 17 and Jordan Spinks had 16. Fitzgerald also had a team-high 21 assists and Lacey Evans had eight.

Fitzgerald paced Danville in digs with 10, followed by Chelsea Keenum’s five.

In aces, Spinks, Simmons and Kirby Wallace each had six.

Meanwhile, Austin won its other two matches Monday. The Lady Black Bears earned a 25-12, 25-12 win over Athens and beat Speake 25-20, 25-13.

Shara Foster paced Austin (23-12) with 20 kills, while Brittney Smith followed with 16 and Tiera Robinson added 12.

Lindsey Rogers led the Lady Black Bears in assists with 16, and Carlie Keenum contributed 12.

Shara Foster’s 10 blocks were also a team high. Shanise Foster and Robinson each had five blocks.

In aces, Andrea Frame had a team-leading seven, while Shara Foster had five.

Ali Barnette’s 14 digs were a team-best and Shara Foster followed with five.

Speake suffered only one loss on the day — the defeat to Austin. Otherwise, the Lady Bobcats scored the win over Danville and beat Athens 25-15, 25-13.

Kylie Black led Speake with 26 kills, while Sarah Bolan had 12. Malea Hensley had 23 assists, while Black had 11 blocks and six digs.

Austin will host Florence and Catholic of Huntsville on Tuesday. Danville will host Priceville and Westminster on Tuesday.

Athens Bible sweeps: Athens Bible beat West Limestone 25-14, 25-12 and Whitesburg Christian Academy 25-7, 25-20.

Abbie Melvin had 15 kills, while Christina Ivey added six. Hannah Owen provided 15 assists, and Athena Hinkle had eight. Melvin served seven aces.

Athens Bible (21-1) will play at Hatton and Lawrence County on Tuesday. Hatton is the only team to beat ABS this year.
