Rebels respond with a victory
From staff reports
Before West Morgan High played at Winston County on Friday night, Rebels head coach Pierre Coggins had a message for his team:
This was a must-win game.
His players responded with a 30-19 victory, keeping West Morgan solidly in the Class 2A playoff race. The Rebels entered in a four-way tie for third place in Region 8 along with Tanner, Cherokee and Winston County. Only the top four teams in each region advance to the playoffs.
“I told our kids that this is one of those games that if we lose it, our playoff hopes are lost,” Coggins said.
West Morgan (4-3, 3-2 in Region 8) trailed early in the third quarter 20-17 but rallied with two touchdowns to close out the victory.
Terrance Carter rushed 10 times for 154 yards and a touchdown, while Josh McAbee completed 8 of 11 passes for 121 yards and two touchdowns.
“Josh McAbee — every week, he makes big plays,” Coggins said. “Terrance Carter, a sophomore, had another good game. I also thought the offensive line played well, and the defense got better as the game went along.
“The effort as a whole was very good.”
David Pritchard and Quinton Davis each caught a touchdown pass from McAbee, and Desmond Clay rushed for a score. Jared Spooner kicked a 41-yard field goal.
Tanner 34, Hatton 14: Derrick Malone rushed for 126 yards on 13 carries and scored twice in Tanner’s win at Hatton.
Malone gave Tanner (4-3, 3-2 in Region 8) a 13-0 lead when he rushed 4 yards for a touchdown with 23 seconds left in the first half.
Nobody scored again until the fourth quarter, when Tanner piled up 21 points and Hatton got both of its touchdowns.
Jarquise Peoples scored twice, including an 11-yard run in the first quarter and a 6-yard run in the fourth.
Marquis McDonald scored on a 55-yard run for Tanner, and Keith Shoulders caught a successful 2-point pass from Dominique Randolph.
For Hatton (0-7, 0-5), Chase Martin scored twice on runs of 38 and 16 yards.
Falkville 29, Victory Christian 0: The Blue Devils moved into a tie for third place in Region 8 with a road victory.
Falkville is 4-3, including 3-2 in the region. That ties Cleveland, which dropped to 3-2 in the region after losing 20-7 to J.B. Pennington.
The Blue Devils did it with a strong defensive effort, which included a 37-yard interception return by Austin Murphy.
Dustin Jump rushed 3 yards for a touchdown, and Aaron Lee scored on runs of 10 and 2 yards. Steven Lindsey caught a 32-yard scoring pass from Lee.
Addison 49, Phil Campbell 16: Andrew Privett picked up 220 rushing yards on only 12 carries and scored three touchdowns to pace Addison (6-1, 5-0 in Region 8).
Privett scored on first-half runs of 50, 25 and 32 yards as Addison piled up 412 rushing yards and 492 yards of offense.
Jason Fowler, Alan Oliver and C.A. Adcock each added a touchdown run, while Colton Alston caught a 22-yard scoring pass from Jordan Rivers.
