Danville, Hatton, ABS win area titles
Lady Hawks beat Good
Hope for first time

Danville High’s volleyball team picked the right time to beat Good Hope.

The two teams met twice in the regular season, with Good Hope winning in straight sets twice. They met again Monday in the Class 3A, Area 13 tournament finals, and this time, the Lady Hawks scored a 25-12, 25-20, 29-27 victory.

Danville made the finals by defeating Hanceville 16-25, 25-10, 25-12, 25-16.

Alaina Fitzgerald led Danville with 35 kills, while Jordan Spinks had 28 and Lindsay Simmons 25.

Fitzgerald led in assists, too, with 41, while Kimberly Lindsey had 31. Lacey Evans led in digs with 28, while Kirby Wallace was tops in aces with four.

Class 2A, Area 16: With two straight wins Monday, the Hatton Lady Hornets extended their volleyball season by winning the Area 16 tournament.

Hatton beat Mars Hill 25-14, 25-6, 25-13 and downed Cold Springs 25-20, 25-14, 25-16.

Kaitlyn Fleming and Chloe Malone paced the Lady Hornets with 24 and 15 kills, respectively, while Tamra Terry contributed a team-high 55 assists.

Fleming also led Hatton in aces with seven, while Malone had three.

Malone and Fleming each had three blocks. In digs, Erin Shelton led with four, while Emily Shelton had three.

Class 1A, Area 15: Athens Bible beat Mount Hope 25-15, 25-14, 25-22 to take the 1A, Area 15 championship.

Both teams will advance to regional play Saturday.

For ABS (44-7), Abbie Melvin had nine kills, while Christina Ivey and Makayla Melvin added eight each. Hannah Owens had 13 assists, while Makayla Melvin contributed eight digs. Abbie Melvin led in blocks (four) and aces (four).

County tournaments

  • Lawrence County won the Lawrence County tournament this weekend by defeating R.A. Hubbard 25-6, 25-5, Speake 25-22, 21-25, 25-16 and Hatton twice 25-14, 23-25, 25-16 and 25-16, 25-13.

    The Lady Red Devils’ Summer Wilkerson (39 kills, 30 assists) was the tournament most valuable player. Olivia Coffey (16 kills), Nakia McDaniel (17 kills) and Carlie Borden (16 digs) made the all-tournament team. Lawrence County is 45-16.

  • Speake won two of four matches in the Lawrence County tournament as Kylie Black had 45 kills, 26 digs and 14 blocks. Malea Hensley had 24 kills, 40 assists and 17 digs. Cortney Jones had 36 assists for the Lady Bobcats (29-17).
