Lawrence County wins area tourney
Decatur, Austin finish
runner-up but will advance

The Lawrence County Lady Red Devils extended their volleyball season, winning the Class 4A, Area 14 tournament with two straight victories Tuesday.
Class 6A Austin and 5A Decatur also advanced to regional tournament action this weekend — both finishing runner-up in their respective areas.
Area tournament winners and runners-up advance to regional tournaments Saturday.
Class 6A, Area 16: The Austin Lady Black Bears earned a convincing 25-9, 25-16, 25-10 win over Sparkman before falling to Bob Jones 25-16, 25-21, 25-18 in the finals.
Shara Foster and Brittney Smith made the all-tournament team for Austin.
Foster had 28 kills to lead the Lady Black Bears, followed by Smith’s 18. Foster was also best in blocks with five. Lindsey Rogers and Carlie Keenum delivered 22 and 21 assists, respectively.
Ali Barnette had a team-high 18 digs, while Lindsey Fail had 12. Fail also had a team-best four aces on a sharp serving day for the Lady Black Bears.
Austin (47-22) will play its regional tournament at Grissom on Saturday.
Class 5A, Area 16: The Decatur Lady Red Raiders clinched a regional tournament spot with a 25-13, 23-25, 25-21, 25-16 win over Russellville.
Muscle Shoals beat Decatur in the finals 25-11, 25-15, 25-12.
Decatur’s Whitney Fletcher, Quita Lyle and Shannon Laughlin made the all-tournament team.
Fletcher’s 26 kills paced the Lady Red Raiders, while Lyle added 13 and Laughlin had six. Fletcher also had four aces. Laughlin had a team-high 23 assists, and Kim Collis contributed nine.
In blocks, Kate Graham led with 16, while Laughlin followed with 10 and Fletcher had five. Jelisa Thompson had a team-best 11 digs, while Fletcher had eight and Lyle six.
Class 4A, Area 14: Lawrence County earned its area championship with wins over Fairview and Priceville.
Lawrence County downed Fairview in straight sets 25-14, 25-14, 25-12 before beating Priceville 25-5, 25-14, 25-10 in the finals.
Summer Wilkerson’s 28 kills led the Lady Red Devils, while Olivia Coffey added 15. Shae Lane gave Lawrence County a big boost with 43 assists, while Wilkerson contributed 15.
Coffey was best in blocks with nine, followed by Nakia McDaniel’s six. In digs, Lane had 12 and Carlie Borden had 10.
Class 1A, Area 12: Speake beat St. Bernard 25-12, 25-15, 25-14 on Monday to take the area championship.
Kylie Black led the Lady Bobcats (31-17) with 13 kills, while Sarah Bolan and Malea Hensley each had seven.
Hensley had 16 assists, while Cortney Jones pitched in 13. Hensley contributed four digs, and Black had six aces.
Speake will play at a regional in Gaston on Saturday at 10 a.m.
