Golden Eagles whip Patriots to keep playoff hopes breathing

Athens High remained in the hunt for a playoff berth with a 37-14 home win over Brewer on Friday night.

Athens improved to 3-5 overall and 3-3 in Class 5A, Region 8, which is tied with Hartselle for fourth place. Hartselle holds the edge in a tiebreaker with a win over Athens earlier this year. The top four in each region advance to the state playoffs.

The Golden Eagles beat Brewer with a big night from Jamal Bess, who rushed 18 times for 123 yards and three touchdown runs of 33, 1, and 20 yards.

He did all of his scoring in the first half as Athens built a 30-7 lead.

Chad Cain and John Wallace each added a 1-yard run for a touchdown.

Brewer (3-5, 1-5) got its touchdowns on a 40-yard interception return by Miles Cloer and a 6-yard pass from Tyler Parker to Zach Graham.

The Patriots' Chris Dickerson rushed for 69 yards on 16 carries.

Priceville 40, Ardmore 21: The Bulldogs won to maintain at least a tie for fourth place in 4A, Region 7.

Priceville (4-4, 3-3 in the region) did it with a big second quarter when the Bulldogs scored three touchdowns to take a 26-14 lead into halftime.

Logan Manthey led the way by throwing three touchdown passes, including a 5-yarder to Eli Allen, a 21-yarder to Scott Smith and a 15-yarder to Jeremy Hale. Manthey also scored on a 1-yard run.

Allen rushed 13 times for 77 yards and a touchdown. He also completed a 70-yard scoring pass to Aaron Sawyer.

Hale rushed 12 times for 73 yards.

Ardmore's Landon Curtis rushed for 123 yards on 19 carries and a touchdown.

Elijah Barnes threw two touchdown passes for the Tigers (1-7, 0-6), including one of 15 yards to Curtis and a 44-yarder to Jake Marlow.

Madison County 56, East Limestone 28: With its win, Madison County set up a showdown next week with North Jackson. Both are unbeaten in 4A, Region 7.

East Limestone (6-2, 4-2 in the region) had Madison County deadlocked 14-14 after one quarter but fell behind 35-21 by halftime and never could catch up.

Jonathan Pinque scored twice for the Indians on a 1-yard run and a 22-yard pass from Cade Medley.

Colin Carter added a 79-yard touchdown run, while Oneal King scored on an 18-yard pass from Chad Dewitt.

For Madison County (8-0, 6-0), Cameron Cross rushed for three touchdowns and caught a scoring pass.

Central-Florence 30, Lawrence County 14: Central won as Drew Humphrey rushed for 275 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Lawrence County (2-6, 0-6 in 4A, Region 8) held a quick lead early at 14-6 in the second quarter. Central rallied with a touchdown right before halftime and then took control in the third and fourth quarters.

Arron Hubbard and Radney Wallace each rushed for a touchdown for the Red Devils.
