PELHAM — Athens Bible coach April Davis talked to her players before a recent practice and wanted to know about their favorite match of the year.

Several named this match or that match, but Davis figures the Trojans have a new favorite after knocking off top-ranked Kinston 25-15, 23-25, 25-21, 25-15 to advance to the school's first final since 2000.

"This is huge," Davis said following the match.

"I can't believe it. Our girls have worked so hard, but we played with heart tonight."

The fourth-ranked Trojans (50-7) will play Spring Garden in Thursday's 1:30 p.m. championship.

Athens Bible downed Parkway Christian in the first round 25-12, 25-17, 25-16 behind Abbie Melvin's 20 kills and three aces for the Trojans.

Christina Ivey added 13 kills, while Hannah Owen provided 23 assists and two aces against Parkway.

The Trojans got 23 more kills and 24 digs from Melvin in the Kinston victory, while Ivey and Athena Hinkle each added 18 kills. Owen provided 24 assists and 12 digs.

The last championship for Athens Bible came in 1989 when Davis was a sophomore.

Eighth-ranked Danville downed Montevallo 25-21, 27-25, 25-18 in the first round behind Alaina Fitzgerald's 20 kills. Lindsey Simmons added 12 kills, and Lacey Evans had 25 digs.

The Hawks then fell to third-ranked Madison Academy 25-17, 25-23, 25-14.

Jordan Spinks led the Hawks (42-28) with 15 kills while Fitzgerald added 10 kills and 15 assists.

Seventh-ranked Elkmont (46-20) beat Montgomery Academy 25-21, 17-25, 25-22, 25-22 in the first round behind Jamie Lack's 20 kills, five blocks and two aces. Michelle Tucker added seven blocks, and Bailee Robinson provided 33 assists in the Red Devils' victory over the fourth-ranked Eagles.

Elkmont then fell to top-ranked Lexington 25-13, 25-8, 25-16 in the other Class 3A semifinal.

Lack led the Red Devils with 10 kills while Robinson added five assists and 17 digs.

Second-ranked Class 2A Addison jumped out to a two-game lead over top-ranked Bayside Academy, but couldn't hold the five-time defending champion as Bayside won 20-25, 23-25, 26-24, 25-21, 17-15 to advance to its sixth straight class final.

Bayside (43-15) also picked up win No. 900 for coach Ann Schilling, who has won 51 matches during the past nine seasons.

Haley Wiggins led Addison with 14 kills and three blocks.

Teammate Jessy Willingham added 10 kills and three blocks. Meanwhile, Shanna Smith provided 10 kills and 15 blocks.
