Sparkman hands Athens its 7th loss

Bryant Williams and Rob Weaver ran for two touchdowns each and Sparkman rushed for 274 yards to beat the defending Class 5A champion Athens Golden Eagles 37-27 on Friday night.

Williams’ 1-yard touchdown run gave Sparkman a 37-14 lead entering the final quarter. Athens (3-7) added 13 points in the fourth quarter on Todd Pepper’s 7-yard touchdown pass to Justin Brown, and a 4-yard scoring run by Chris Cain.

Sparkman (3-7) jumped out to an early 17-0 lead. Williams scored on a 9-yard run. Michael Kitchens added a 25-yard field goal, and Bryant Boyer returned an Athens interception 30 yards for a score.

Athens finally got on the board with a 50-yard rushing touchdown by Jamal Bess. Weaver then scored on runs of 20 and 12 yards.

Athens’ Blake Sulcer added a 1-yard run late in the third.

Arab 17, Brewer 0: Brewer’s Chris Dickerson rushed for 92 yards on 19 carries as the Patriots (3-7) fell to Arab (2-8).

Arab’s John King had 117 yards on 25 carries in the shuout.
