Decatur, Lawrence County, ABS win sectionals

Decatur's girls and the boys and girls squads from Lawrence County and Athens Bible won sectional cross country championships recently.

The Lady Red Raiders won the Class 5A, Section 4 championship in Florence, while the Red Devils' two teams swept the 3A-4A, Section 3 titles at Cold Springs High. ABS swept the 1A-2A, Section 4 title in Florence.

Three girls won individual championships: Decatur's Sally Adams, Lawrence County's Ari Stephenson and Hatton's Courtney Rutherford.

Two boys won a title: Lawrence County's Collins Montgomery and Athens Bible's Colby Phillips

A rundown of how local teams and runners fared at sectional meets:

Class 6A, Section 5: In the girls division at Madison, Austin placed fifth, while Jennifer Dunn was second to Sparkman's Katie Huston. Austin's Kristen Lupton was 24th, and Sarah Lane was 30th.

The Austin boys finished fifth, too, while Matthew Dunn was eighth individually, followed by teammates Jeff Holm (23rd), John Boldin (24th), Peter Nevels (25th) and Michael Rossi (28th).

Class 5A, Section 4: Decatur won the girls title behind the performances of Sally Adams (first), Meg Adams (second), Kylie Peebles (eighth), Meghan Schmidt (10th) and Brianna Speegle (11th). Brewer's Bree Watkins placed fifth.

In the boys competition, Brewer placed second to Cullman, while Decatur was third.

Decatur's Samuel Hand finished third individually, while teammate Alec Rawlings was 10th. Trent Derrick was 13th, and Francisco Lopez was 14th, while Clark Maywell was 15th.

For Brewer, Nathan Hamilton was fourth, Travis Hollomon fifth, Hunter Eddy seventh, Andy Sanford ninth and Josh David 12th.

Class 3A-4A, Section 3: Stephenson led the Lawrence County girls victory as teammate Lyndsie Warren was second and Victoria Draper was third.

Samantha Black placed sixth, and Kerri Lynn Letson finished ninth.

East Lawrence finished third as Meagan Kelley was fifth individually, and Joni Buttram was 11th.

In the boys division, Montgomery pulled in an individual section title as teammate William McWhorter was second and Logan Underwood third. Six more Lawrence County runners finished in the top 10 — Jonathon Naylor (fifth), Josh Crumpton (sixth), Ryan Hood (seventh), C.J. Woodham (eighth), Ryne Black (ninth) and Michael Brooks (10th).

East Lawrence was sixth, and its highest individual finisher was Zach Fye in 16th place.

Class 1A-2A, Section 4: Phillips helped pace ABS to its boys title. Teammate Andy Davidson was third, while Caleb George was eighth, Cliff Denton ninth, Tyler Claxton 10th, Tad McFall 11th and David Watson 12th.

Second-place Hatton placed three runners in the top five — Zeke Nichols (second), Jade Brackin (fourth) and Reid Harrison (fifth).

Decatur Heritage's Jake Cook was sixth, while Thomas Vinton was seventh. The Eagles finished third in the team standings.

In the girls division, winning ABS had six finish in the top 10 — Chelsea Burgess (fourth), Krys Eubanks (fifth), Amelia Harwell (seventh), Sarah Bobo (eighth), Katherine McGee (ninth) and Logan Dean (10th).

Hatton's Rutherford won the championship. The Lady Hornets did not enter enough runners to compete for the team title.

Class 1A-2A, Section 3: Falkville's Crystal Gibbs placed second to help Falkville place No. 2 behind Cold Springs.

Three others Lady Blue Devils finished in the top eight — Emily Robbins (sixth), Celese Sharbutt (seventh) and Crystal Carver (eighth).

Speake's Kalin Rittenberry was 11th individually.

In the boys division, Falkville's Justin Blanchard finished second, while teammate Cory Hill was fifth and Heath Blanchard was 11th. The Blue Devils did not enter enough runners to compete for the team title.

Speake was third, and the Bobcats' Shane Naylor finished 12th.
