AUBURN — Auburn’s women’s basketball team opened the 2007 season with a 91-47 win over Detroit Mercy in Beard-Eves-Memorial Coliseum on Sunday.

The Tigers had six players score in double digits and outrebounded Detroit 51-28.

“It’s a great way to start the season with a win,” coach Nell Fortner said. “I really like the way we are putting points on the board.”

Auburn is receiving votes in the AP preseason women’s basketball poll, just five spots away from breaking into the top 25.

The Tigers easily handled Detroit, which won five games last season. Tamela McCorvey, the game’s leading scorer with 18 points, hit a 3-pointer in the closing seconds of the first half to give Auburn a 41-17 lead at the break.

The Tigers had 20 steals and 19 fast-break points. Auburn, which made it to the WNIT final eight last season, held Detroit scoreless for almost nine minutes during a 17-0 first-half run.
