D.J. Jones scored four touchdowns and collected 178 yards on 18 rushes to carry Hazlewood past Gaston 42-14 and into the third round of the Class 1A state playoffs Friday night.

The Golden Bears marched down the field to start the game, going 71 yards in seven plays. D.J. Jones scored on a 15-yard run to make it 6-0 with 9:31 left in the first quarter.

Hazlewood's Quintavius Williams recovered a Gaston fumble at the Hazlewood 36-yard line to set up Jones' second score, a 2-yard run with 5:59 left in the opening quarter. Two runs from Keenen Porter totaling 62 yards set up the touchdown. Jones ran in the 2-point conversion.

Early in the second quarter, Jones scored on a 65-yard dash. Shannon Nance kicked the extra point.

Before halftime, senior quarterback Keginald Harris found sophomore Larry Hampton on a 37-yard scoring strike with 1:06 left. The Golden Bears were up 28-0 and never threatened.

"You can't do that (turn the ball over) against a team that good," said Gaston coach Swane Morris. "That (Hazlewood) is a heck of a football team. They have speed everywhere. If you ever get behind the eight-ball against them, they are going to make you pay."

Gaston's Demont Buice scored on an 8-yard run with 3:05 left in the third quarter. Blake Campbell's PAT made it 35-7.

Jones scored for the fourth time in the game on the next drive, this one a 2-yard run, to make it 42-7.

Porter finished the game with 109 yards on 13 carries.

Massey had touchdown runs of 16, 6 and 31 yards in the opening quarter. Speake got a safety in the second quarter to make the halftime score 20-9.

Sulligent took a 26-17 lead into the final quarter and then sealed the win when Robert White caught a touchdown pass from Bradley Blaylock. Speake's Chase Atkins had a 2-yard touchdown run to finish the scoring.
