Postcard from Hanceville
High school basketball teams have hit Hanceville with dreams of advancing to the Final Four, but the Northwest Regionals are about more than hoops. DAILY Sports Writer Brooke Milam gives a short on-the-scene report:
A year ago, the Athens High boys basketball team ended then Class 5A No. 2 ranked-Parker's season with a 64-48 win in the Northwest Regional semifinals.
A year later — same teams, a similar score, but a different result. This time Parker knocked off Athens with a 68-49 victory.
"Today, they were the better team," Athens coach Venard Hendrix said. The Golden Eagles and the Thundering Herd are becoming familiar postseason foes. Some things have changed, and some have stayed the same. Parker coach Maurice Ford said the absence of Athens' post player Richard Hendrix has given Golden Eagles a new look, but that he still saw "the same good guard play."
Familiar teams like Parker and Athens are what builds postseason traditions. The honor of making it to the regionals is something that programs can take pride in.
"I'm proud of our team. We believed in ourselves that we could get back here and worked hard to do it." Hendrix said.
